February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and this year’s theme is Brush Floss Smile! The month-long celebration is a wonderful opportunity to promote oral health for all children. Every child should have their teeth brushed with fluoridated toothpaste twice per day and flossed once per day. It is also important to provide children with healthy snacks, limit their sugar-sweetened drinks, and make sure they visit the dentist every six months.

We are excited to get our 2023 Olympic festivities started.  Rumor has it that there will be a friendly (aka extremely competitive) round or two of bowling to start off the competitions.  In addition to bowling, we look forward to spending quality time with friends and meeting coworkers from other clinics.  Great Smiles will be providing food and beverage as well.  We look forward to seeing you there and want to thank everyone for all you do at Great Smiles!  Be on the lookout for additional information in the weeks ahead.

Applications are reviewed and the final selections are made by a panel of local High School teachers. Each winner receives $500 to use for educational expenses. We are proud to support and encourage these students as they continue their education.

• The Great Smiles Healthcare Career Scholarship has been awarded to Andrea Castillo, a graduate of Tuscola High School. Ms. Castillo will pursue a career as a physician assistant.
• The Great Beginnings Justin Leon McClellan Scholarship has been presented to Rebekah Anders, a graduate of Erwin High School. Ms. Anders will focus on a field of study in music and science education.
• The Great Beginnings Dr. Gayle Painter Scholarship has been given to Kristen O’Rear, a graduate of Tuscola High School. Ms. O’Rear will pursue a career as a dentist.

Great Beginnings Pediatric Dental Specialists welcomes Dr. Stephen G. Chadwick to the Pediatric Dental Team. He specializes in Pediatric Dentistry and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, ‘Dr. Stephen’ completed a general practice residency in Hampton, Virginia. He then practiced general dentistry for four years in Northern California while serving as the Dental Director of a community health center. It was during this time Dr. Stephen realized his passion for treating children and adolescents and decided to pursue specialized training in this field. He completed a pediatric dental residency and received a Master of Science in Dentistry and a Master of Public Health from the University of Washington where he still serves as the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry Coordinator. Dr. Stephen is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, North Carolina Dental Society, and the Buncombe County Dental Society.

Dr. Stephen was born and raised in Charlotte, NC and after eight years on the West Coast is excited to have returned home to raise his family in Western North Carolina. He and his wife, Emmy, are expecting a son and have a two-year-old daughter, Caroline. They enjoy hiking, backpacking, sailing, and spending time together.
