The cost of your child’s dental care depends on the type of visit, the treatment, your child’s dental needs, and your insurance. Knowing what to expect ahead of time helps you plan, ask better questions, and make confident decisions for your family.

Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics offers pediatric dental and orthodontic care for families across the Asheville area.

What Affects the Cost of Pediatric Dental Care?

Several things shape what you’ll pay for your child’s dental care:

First exams, regular cleanings, and emergency visits may each have different fees.

X-rays and diagnostic imaging, when needed, add to the cost.

Preventive services like fluoride treatments and dental sealants have their own fees.

Cavity treatment, fillings, emergency care, and extractions affect the total.

Sedation, when clinically appropriate, adds to the cost.

Orthodontic evaluations may have a separate fee.

Your insurance benefits affect what you pay out of pocket.

Any additional treatment adds to the total.

Every child’s needs are different, so there’s no single price that fits everyone.

What Do Common Pediatric Dental Services Cost?

Routine Dental Exams

A pediatric dental exam includes a review of your child’s dental and medical history, a look at their teeth and gums, and a check on growth. Regular checkups help catch concerns early. Costs vary by practice, whether it’s a new patient visit, and whether your child needs diagnostics.

Cleanings

A dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar, polishes teeth, and reviews brushing and flossing habits. Regular cleanings help protect your child from cavities and gum disease. Costs vary based on your child’s age, how much buildup there is, and the level of care needed.

X-Rays and Diagnostic Imaging

X-rays let your child’s dentist see below the surface, between teeth, and how the jaw is developing. Your child’s imaging needs change with age and dental development. Prices depend on the type and number of images.

Fluoride Treatments and Dental Sealants

These preventive services help lower your child’s risk of cavities. Fluoride strengthens enamel, and sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They often cost much less than restorative care, and many insurance plans cover them.

Cavity Treatment

Cavity treatment costs depend on how large the cavity is and the type of treatment. A small cavity may need a filling, while a larger one may need a crown or a pulpotomy. Common options include tooth-colored fillings and stainless steel crowns.

Emergency Pediatric Care

Dental emergencies include severe tooth pain, knocked-out or broken teeth, swelling, or bleeding. Emergency visits cost differently than routine visits because your child needs prompt care, sometimes after hours. Ask about fees and coverage ahead of time so you know what to expect.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Children’s Dental Care?

Coverage depends on your plan. Many plans cover preventive exams and cleanings, often at no cost to you. Deductibles, copays, annual maximums, and exclusions can all affect your out-of-pocket costs.

Before treatment, check in with your dental office and your insurance company. It’s an easy way to avoid surprises and plan your budget.

How Can You Prepare for Your Child’s Dental Costs?

A little planning goes a long way:

Ask for an estimate before treatment when possible.

Review your insurance benefits.

Talk through preventive and restorative options.

Ask whether your child needs X-rays or other evaluations.

Ask about payment methods and treatment options.

Keep up with regular preventive visits so small concerns stay small.

Why Is Preventive Pediatric Dental Care Important?

Regular exams and cleanings keep your child’s mouth healthy and help catch concerns early. Cavities and developmental concerns are easier and less costly to treat when your child’s dentist spots them early. Preventive care also builds a steady routine from your child’s very first visits.

At Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we design dental care specifically for kids, with a focus on prevention and education.

We also offer orthodontic evaluations, treatment, and treatment planning, and we take time to educate parents along the way. Our team listens closely and cares for each child with a family-centered approach.

What Should You Ask Before Your Child Starts Treatment?

What treatment does my child need?

What’s the estimated cost?

Does insurance cover this treatment?

What will my out-of-pocket cost be?

Does my child need X-rays or other tests?

Are there other treatment options?

Will my child need follow-up visits?

What payment options do you offer?

Pediatric Dental Insurance Policy

As a courtesy to our patients with dental insurance benefits, we will submit your claim and provide any necessary information to assist you in receiving your dental benefits and services such as orthodontic treatments. We are participating providers in the SunLife and Delta Dental network for our Waynesville and Sylva locations only.

In addition to filing your claims electronically and as a courtesy, we will verify eligibility and benefit coverage of your children orthodontics fees. The information provided by the insurance companies is only an estimate of coverage and is “no guarantee of payment”. We do ask that you contact your insurance carrier prior to your visit to obtain essential information which will more accurately reflect your coverage. Providing us with this information and up-to-date insurance policy information will expedite the processing of claims.

Any payment not paid by your insurance company will be the responsibility of the patient/children’s legal guardian to pay the balance due. The practice will not assume that responsibility. If you have a direct reimbursement policy, payment in full is expected on the day of service, we will file your claim and your dental plan will reimburse you. We do not file secondary insurance or verify the eligibility or plan benefits.

An account statement will be issued every 30 days, whether insurance has been paid or not. For any account balance over 60 days, a late fee may be applied.

Please provide a current copy of your insurance card at each children dentistry or orthodontics appointment. If the insurance pays more than was estimated and results in a credit on your account, we can leave the credit amount on your account for future treatment or we can provide a refund check.

Important Facts About your Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is a contract between the patient and the insurance company and/or employer. It is a benefit to assist you with the cost of dental care. At no time should insurance benefits compromise your doctor’s diagnosis or affect your choice of treatment.

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to familiarize yourself with your insurance benefits. Dental plans vary by fees, procedures, frequencies and limitations of services, deductibles, non-covered expenses and usual and customary rates.

The dental practice is not responsible for how your insurance company pays its claims. It is the responsibility of the patient/patient’s parent/legal guardian (not the insurance company or dental practice) to pay for fees not covered under the dental insurance plan

X-rays and fluoride treatment are typically subject to frequency limitations
