Orthodontist Experts in Western North Carolina
What makes an orthodontist expert?
Orthodontists are specialized dentists who receive additional training to help patients with teeth and jaw alignment issues. Orthodontists focus on dentition, which is the arrangement and development of teeth in the mouth, as well as occlusions, which is how the upper and lower teeth and jaw come together.1
All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists. In other words, ONLY an orthodontist expert can assess dentition and occlusion issues and provide the array of orthodontic treatments that can correct the issue

Comprehensive Care from Top Orthodontists
While some dentists can receive training to offer patients Invisalign (which is a great ortho treatment option), only an orthodontist has the training and expertise to offer the comprehensive array of treatment options.
Great Smiles has some of the most talented and respected top orthodontists and team willing to invite you to building brighter smiles.
Wired Braces
Over time, wired braces—often referred to as traditional braces—provide precise and targeted tooth movement for bite problems. Only an orthodontist expert has the specific training to provide this orthodontic braces treatment.
Clear Aligners
Generally speaking, Invisalign and other clear aligners are a suitable choice for less intensive oral problems. These aligners give patients a less obvious ortho alternative, easier to clean, and removable.
Retainers
With a range of retainer alternatives, patients can keep their finest smile for many years to come. A reasonably priced method of supporting the alignment of the jaw and teeth is using retainers. It’s a practical choice.

Orthodontist Expertise Explained:
What does it take to become an orthodontist?
1. Advanced Education:
First, an orthodontist completes their dental degree (DDS/DMD), which typically takes 4 years. Then, orthodontists complete an additional 2-3 years of full-time, accredited orthodontic residency training.

2. Focused Training:
Different from dentists, orthodontists gain in-depth knowledge about: growth and development of the teeth and jaws; biomechanics of tooth movement; and how to implement a variety of orthodontic treatments including traditional braces, clear braces, invisible aligners, and retainers.

3. Continual Development:
Orthodontics is a constantly evolving field with new technologies, materials, and techniques. Experts regularly attend conferences, workshops, and courses to stay updated. They may also participate in research, publish studies, or teach to advance the field.
