What was college like for you?
My college experience was terrific. I was a member of the UNC Men’s Basketball team for four years under Coach Dean Smith. I was able to establish lifetime friendships and travel to places that I never would have been able to go to if I had not played college basketball for UNC. Playing college sports at that level teaches you a lot about mental toughness. Dental school was challenging and fun because I found a career path that I had a passion for so when I work it never feels like work.
As a founder of Great Smiles 40+ years ago, what is exciting about changes over the years?
I remember the opening of our new dental office at 10B Yorkshire Street as the start of our practice’s expansion. I cherish the times that we had with each new doctor joining our practice. I cherish the many years that I have worked with the many long-term staff members.

Why did you choose this work?
I always wanted to be a dentist. I had a lot of orthodontic treatment growing up and along with that, I had lots of general dental care. In addition, I was named after the close family friend who was my dentist growing up. Over the years, I have been very pleased to see many former patients choose a career in dentistry either as dental assistants, dental hygienists, office dental administrators, or dentists.
As a dental student, I excelled in my rotation through the pediatric dental clinic. Many of my professors in dental school that took great interest in me were pediatric dentists. Also, I enjoyed working with young people to establish good dental health that would serve them well for a lifetime.
What’s your favorite part of working at Great Smiles?
I enjoy meeting new patients and getting a picture with them on their first visit. Then, I enjoy getting a graduation picture when they finish high school. It is very satisfying to see our young patients grow up to become young adults with healthy teeth.

Fun Facts About Me
Choose a Superpower: I watched Superman a lot growing up. I had some crazy youthful idea that I could fly like him. As a child, I mistakenly thought that if I put on a cape that I could fly. Regrettably, when I jumped off my back porch as a child I quickly learned that gravity wins. Luckily, I did not kill myself.
Away from Office: I enjoy relaxing at the beach under a tent or umbrella listening to music until the late afternoon.
