Orthodontic Treatment Options
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on fixing crooked teeth and bite problems. Great Smiles orthodontists work to give every patient a beautiful, confident smile with treatments that meet their needs!
Wired braces
Often referred to as traditional braces, wired braces provide specific and precise movement of teeth and bite issues over time. Only an orthodontist has the specialized training for this type of ortho work.
Clear Aligners
Clear Aligners like Invisalign provide patients with a less noticeable option that provides flexibility in food selection and cleaning options. Typically this is a good option for less extensive oral challenges
Retainers
Patients can maintain their best smile for years to come with a variety of retainer options. Retainers are a cost-effective way to support teeth and jaw alignment. It’s an easy and convenient option.
All Orthodontists are Dentists.
But not All Dentists are Orthodontists.
Nearly 90% of people in a study did not realize this fact1. What does it mean? Orthodontists receive specialized education and training to provide a variety of orthodontic treatment services such as braces, clear aligners, and retainers, but dentists have not received this training to provide all of these comprehensive services. This is important when choosing treatment provider.

The Pros and Cons of Orthodontics Options:
While other options exist, these options below represent the most common. The choice of treatment depends on factors like age, the complexity of the problem, cosmetic preferences, and budget. Your Great Smiles orthodontist will recommend the most suitable option after a thorough evaluation1 2 3.
Traditional Metal Braces
Most common. Consists of metal brackets attached to the teeth and connected by wires. The wires are tightened periodically to gradually move the teeth.
Best For: Severe misalignment, overcrowding, bite issues.
Pros: Highly effective for complex cases.
Cons: Visible, can cause some discomfort.
Ceramic Braces
Similar to traditional metal braces. Made of clear or tooth-colored ceramic material, making them less noticeable.
Best For: Patients who want effective treatment with less visible hardware.
Pros: Less noticeable than metal braces.
Cons: More expensive, prone to staining, and slightly more fragile.
Clear Aligners
Invisalign is the common brand. Clear, removable trays custom-made to fit over the teeth and gradually move them into alignment.
Best For: Mild to moderate misalignment.
Pros: Virtually invisible, removable, more comfortable.
Cons: Must be worn 20-22 hours per day, not suitable for severe cases, can be more expensive.
Retainers
After orthodontic treatment. Keep the teeth in their new positions. These can be removable or fixed (bonded behind the teeth).
Best For: Maintaining results after braces or aligners.
Pros: Prevents teeth from shifting back.
Cons: Must be worn as prescribed to be effective.
